ProvenAI

Every AI answer, traced to its source.

ProvenAI is an open-source provenance layer for AI knowledge: contributors decide which agents may use their documents, and every answer shows whose knowledge it drew on.

A ProvenAI agent answer followed by source cards, each naming the contributor and the document section used
Under every answer: the contributor and the exact document it used.

See it run.

A data pod gets its policies, an agent receives its verifiable ID, and a chat answer arrives with its sources. Watch the full narrated demo

The problem

Why AI knowledge needs provenance.

AI agents now answer from other people's knowledge, but the people who wrote it cannot see, steer, or get credit for how it is used.

  • No provenance

Readers cannot tell which sources an AI answer was built from.

  • No control

Creators do not decide when, or by which agents, their knowledge is used.

  • No fair credit

Ad-based models break down when one answer draws on many contributors.

Under the hood

Built on open identity standards.

ProvenAI tracks knowledge at the level of a paragraph, identifies agents with self-sovereign identity, and keeps an audit trail no single party can rewrite.

ISCC content codes
Identify individual sections of a document, not just whole files.
W3C DIDs and verifiable credentials
Identify agents and organisations without a central authority.
OID4VC and OID4VP
Interoperate with eIDAS 2 wallets, using the EBSI data model for verifiable IDs.
Blockchain audit trail
Merkle trees anchored on Polygon: one daily audit value per agent instead of thousands of transactions.
Gendox
ProvenAI is the data governance and provenance layer for Gendox agents and retrieval.

Validation

Co-designed with educators.

ProvenAI was piloted with tutors building their own AI tutors: a community of 80 tutors, three webinars with 116 registrations, and 21 pilot users in validation. Every respondent said they would use it in daily practice, and the platform reached TRL 7.

  • 80tutors in the co-design community
  • 21pilot users in validation
  • 100%of respondents would use it in daily practice
  • TRL 7deployed in an operational environment
